Producer
Background
Origin. Felix Rank was born in 1987 and grew up in Leonberg, a city of 48,000 inhabitants near Stuttgart, Germany. He later studied graphic design in Mainz alongside Yannic Poepperling, who would become one of his co-founders at BOUCHE.[1]
Location. Rank is a graphic designer and artist based in Berlin, where he lives in the Wedding district. In 2019 he worked full-time as a graphic designer at Boros — a collector who also runs a graphic design studio — while developing BOUCHE's visual identity in the evenings. He quit the studio job when Covid arrived to focus full-time on BOUCHE. Around 2020, roughly two years before an October 2022 interview, he was diagnosed with a chronic disease.[1],[2]
Role & Contribution
Rank is a co-founder of BOUCHE, the Berlin fermented-drinks producer he established in 2019 with Walker Brengel and Yannic Poepperling, all three of whom have artistic backgrounds. He serves as Co-Founder and Creative Director, responsible for the brand's visual identity, including label design.[3]
Visual identity. Rank conceived BOUCHE's brand visual identity, which is based on a colour concept and fictional flowers and has been likened to Matisse's paper cuts and Ellsworth Kelly's plants and shapes. He is credited with conveying the company's identity through simple, colourful shapes.
Collaborations
Rank held an exhibition of ceramics titled FLOWERS at Apartamento Berlin, produced in collaboration with BOUCHE. On the occasion of the exhibition he published a colouring book, also titled FLOWERS, released by Apartamento.[2]
