Background

Genki Komatsu was born in 1994 in Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture. He was born the eldest son into Kanesu Seicha, the family tea business, and is the son of Yukiya Komatsu.[1]

Komatsu aimed to become a teacher and enrolled in the Faculty of Education at Waseda University, from which he graduated. After graduation he worked at several venture and startup companies in Tokyo, in venture staffing and food tech. That work gave him experience in business launches and operational efficiency.[1]

Komatsu also worked for about a year at TeaRoom, a Tokyo-based company engaged in Japanese tea businesses. He then returned from Tokyo to the family business.[1]

Role & Contribution

Genki Komatsu is the founder of IBUKI bottled tea, a brand he founded and launched in November 2022 as the fourth generation of Kanesu Seicha. Yukiya Komatsu created "Bottled Tea IBUKI," the prototype of IBUKI bottled tea. In April 2026 Genki Komatsu was described as the brand owner of IBUKI bottled tea.[2]

Komatsu led the branding of IBUKI bottled tea. He established the brand's concept, mission and values, redesigned its website, and created its packaging design and guidelines.[1]

As of September 2023, Komatsu served as branding manager for IBUKI bottled tea and was set to succeed to Kanesu Seicha as its fourth-generation successor. As of March 2024, he served as branding manager and was active as the fourth-generation successor of Kanesu Seicha.[1]

Collaborations

IBUKI bottled tea and ANoTHER IMPERIAL HOTEL jointly developed the bottled tea UTSUROI, released in November 2024. According to IBUKI, Imperial Hotel bartenders Ido and Watanabe took part in its development together with Komatsu, head of the IBUKI bottled tea business, evaluating the aroma and flavor of the tea leaves. Komatsu describes UTSUROI as drawing out Japanese tea's umami, with a body-rich finish and a fruity aroma distinct from commonly recognised sencha.[3]

IBUKI was chosen as Imperial Hotel's tea partner for "ANoTHER IMPERIAL HOTEL" on four selection criteria: rarity, design, story, and spirit of support.
