In depth

Two parts of one identity

Alishan names the Taiwanese growing area; Jin Xuan names the cultivar. Other cultivars are also grown in Alishan, so Alishan tea and Alishan Jin Xuan are not interchangeable labels. Keeping both words preserves information about the place and the plant used to make this oolong.[1][2]

A naturally creamy aroma

Jin Xuan is associated with floral aromas and a natural milk-like fragrance. That description concerns the tea’s aroma; it does not mean that milk is an inherent ingredient. Some commercial milk oolongs are additionally flavoured, so any actual added flavouring must be established from the particular product’s composition.[1][3][2]

Leaf and processing

Alishan oolongs are associated with a golden infusion. Cultivar, mountain growing conditions and the tea maker’s choices all influence the result. The Jin Xuan cultivar alone does not fix the oxidation or roast level, and the broader Alishan name should not be used to erase the cultivar.[4][1]

A tea for several pours

Alishan oolong is valued for its ability to hold its character over multiple infusions. The leaves can be steeped repeatedly, allowing floral and creamy notes to unfold. This fits the wider oolong practice of short successive infusions while leaving room for a particular tea’s brewing instructions.[1][4]
